About three months ago I started running three times a week and now I’m a bit addicted to it. Sometimes I wake up and don’t really want to go but I never let this hold me back. So far I have managed to make running into a regular habit and I’m hoping to keep it up over the long term.
I’ve always loved walking so running was a natural progression for me, especially as I’ve become more conscious of my health needs recently. Running is helping me improve my fitness and mental wellbeing no end.
Here are three things that I really love about my new hobby:
1) I have more energy during the day
I usually go running at about 5:30am in the morning, before I get ready for work. I am always half asleep when I start but by the time I’ve finished, got home, and had a shower I am completely awake and ready to take on the day. I feel way more alert at work in the morning when I’ve had a good run beforehand.
2) I have time to think
My favourite hobby is thinking up new story ideas and running is the perfect time to do it as it’s just me, my dog and my earphones. No distractions. I also love listening to thoughtful and fun podcasts like Reply All.
I really value any time I get to myself to recharge and reflect. You can’t put a price on that.
3) My dog loves it too
It’s no secret that my dog is one of the most precious things in my life. I will always take advantage of opportunities to go out and have fun with her.
I simply can’t go out for a run without bringing along my dog. She seems to love galloping along beside me and it’s nice to have some company while I’m running. Although I must admit that she has almost pulled me into a hedge a few times after getting distracted by birds and the like.
